Grants temporary administrative stay for one week.
The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals granted an administrative stay to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) this week, temporarily preventing the creation of a state-run court in Jackson, Mississippi.
The population of the city is 79 percent black and the state-run court would place only state-appointed judges within the court. The plaintiff claims that state-appointed judges are “inherently undemocratic,” saying in their lawsuit that this court is the state governor’s attempt to undermine the residents of Jackson.
“We will continue to do everything in our power to fight for Jackson residents’ rights to have control over their own institutions and live free from state-driven discrimination,” stated NAACP spokesperson Alicia Mercedes. Case procedures will continue on Friday after the stay expires.
